Classes are offered from June to September and for other periods upon request. The class size is limited to 6 students and the sessions run Monday though Friday from 8 to 12 a.m. and from 1 to 4 p.m. Free work time is possible in the evening till 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday. All students must have their own tools. The School will furnish the wood and materials needed to complete recommended exercises. Students working on personal projects must bring their own prepared material (wood). Roughing out can be done on School  machines. The School issues certificates to its students.

WOOD CARVING CLASSES

A personalized program is determined, based on expectations and prior knowledge.

 

Novice

Required material: gouges, knives, drawing paper, pencils, etc. Basic instruction - Exploration of the medium - Cutting technique - Basic principles - Exercises: mask, human face, ornamental carving. The School furnishes the wood, some gouges and finishing products. Completed work is the property of the student.

 

Intermediate

Required material: gouges, mallet, knives, paper, pencils, etc. Human and animal anatomy - Ornamental carving - Sculpture in the round - Relief carving - Personal projects.

- The School furnishes clay and wood for the exercises and finishing products.

- Students having personal projects must bring their own prepared wood blanks.

 

Advanced

Required material: gouges, mallet, knives, paper, pencils, etc. Direct carving - Sculpture in the round - Mural - Modeling - Ornamental sculpture - Particular subjects.

- The School furnishes clay and wood for the exercises and finishing products.

- Students having personal projects must bring their own prepared wood blanks.

 

Additional classes

Drawing: anatomy, faces, perspective, etc. Theory, techniques and wood-carving demonstrations. Staining and finishing of completed works.

The School furnishes:

- Basswood and clay for exercises and finishing products.

- Large-size drawing and tracing paper.

- Benches, vises, carving easels, carver’s screws, clamps.

- Sharpening and honing equipment, small electric and hand tools.

- Electric and gasoline chain saws, band saw, jointer and planer.

- Documentation.

DRAWING AND PAINTING CLASSES

An individualized program is determined according to the student’s expectations and prior knowledge and is adjusted to the appropriate technique.

Required material: Drawing paper, pencils. Oil or acrylic paints, minimum 12 tubes. Canvases or mounted supports, brushes, painting medium or retarder for acrylics, rags, apron or smock.

The School furnishes tables, easels, paint thinner and solvent. Documentation is available.

 
     

Novice

Drawing simple forms, lines, shadows and light. Color mixing. Warm and cool colors. Brush and spatula techniques. Shading. Painting of objects and various textures. Still life and landscape. Steps in pictorial creation.

 

Intermediate and Advanced

Observing and drawing, shapes in space. Superposition, juxtaposition, composition and perspective. The golden mean. Mixing colors. Still life, landscape, realistic and abstract portraits. Methods and styles of the masters.
